Why do cats like to sit on laps?

Posted in Pets with tags , , , , , , , , , , on October 20, 2009 by Salem Spookypants

My humans recently questioned why I like to sit on their laps so much.

I enjoy sitting on my humans pretty much 24/7 . I do this because their laps/stomach/legs and even their faces are nice and warm and it feels like I’m sitting on my own personal human heating pad and who wouldn’t like that right? Secondly, I just like hanging out with my mommy and daddy. I know that by sitting on them 24/7 it ensures me a good amount of attention and I LOVE attention whether that be  getting petted, hugged or kissed. Last but not least, I love my mommy and daddy and I know that they enjoy cuddling with me just as much as I enjoy cuddling with them.

Yes, I am a cuddly cat and I’m proud of it! I even give them a massage once in a while to show them how much I care about them.

I Have Ear Mites :-(

Posted in Pets with tags , , , , , , , , , on October 16, 2009 by Salem Spookypants

My ears had been itching me a lot lately. I would meow while scratching them and then shake my violently spreading brown gunk everywhere. My mommy was very concerned that I might have ear mites (I had them when I was a kitten before I was adopted). She made the appointment with my Veterinarian at the Agawam Animal Hospital and brought me in to get checked out.

The Vet took a swab of the gunk inside my ears and then looked at it under a microscope. He found ear mites eww!!!!

A Veternarian technician then put a one time solution inside my ear to kill  all the ear mites. I was not a fan of this and held onto my mommy as they did this to me.

Overall I understand the need to get this taken care of and I’m happy that my mommy cares enough about me to make me better. The total cost of this 15 minute visit was $70 ouch! (Not a fan of the price but my health is worth it)

How did I manage to get ear mites? I’m not quite sure. The mites are transfered from cat to cat. I live alone with my mommy and daddy so I know I didn’t get the mites from them. I have gone on visits to my mommy’s parents house ie. grandparents house where they have three kitties living there so I could have picked the mites up from one them, but I’m not positive. My mommy is going to call her parents to let them know about the ear mite problem just in case.

I’m glad that this problem is finnally solved and that my mommy is so smart to realize when I have a medical problem!

My First Experience With Snow

Posted in Pets with tags , , , , , , , , , , on October 14, 2009 by Salem Spookypants
There's Snow on my face!

There's Snow on my face!

A big  storm came last year and brought this weird white stuff to the outside world. My humans could tell that I was curious as to what is was so they let me outside to check it out (With their supervision).

They carried me down the back steps and placed me down on top of this weird coating of white stuff. BURRR this stuff is COLD!!!!! I tried to walk on it and I kept sinking in (meanwhile my humans laughed at my discoveries)

snowI quickly discovered that being a black cat in this white snow would not help my hunting skills or help me blend in like I normally can. I spent maybe a total of five minutes investigating this stuff until I had enough and indicated to my human daddy that I wished to be picked up and brought insidediscovering snow.

My conclusion is that I am not a fan of snow and I rather just watch from my warm window seat!

UMass Shirt

So my humans have experimented in dressing me up for the past year and a half and I have to say that it really isn’t as bad as most kitties would think. At first I resisted, but I soon gave in to the stylish fashion sense that the humans have. In the above photo I am sporting a UMass T-shirt and some build a bear boxer shorts.  (My mommy graduated from UMass so I help support her love for the school)

UMass T-shirt and boxersIn the above picture you can see that I somehow managed to get my harness off.

Umass t-shirtWow I look really long in the above picture, but still adorable!

My Saint Patrick's Day Sweater

Check out my St. Patrick’s day sweater. This one was a bit too tight but I wore it for my human to make them happy.

The above picture is one of my Christmas sweaters and the dreaded antlers. The antlers have a bell on one side that is extremely tempting to bat at. I have managed to get used to this outfit but it took a while.  (One of my least favorites)

I think I look adorable in the above picture of my other Christmas sweater!

Seeing as it’s my favorite time of the year, my humans bought me a cute little witch’s hat to go along with my orange claw caps. I think I look ultra awesome this season!

I hope you enjoyed my fashion show!

Black cats are Great!!!

Posted in Pets with tags , , , , , , on October 14, 2009 by Salem Spookypants

Seeing as I’m a black cat, I wanted to write an article on the pure foolishness of thinking that having a black cat is a curse, bad luck etc.IMG_2743

I was born this way and it’s not my fault that my fur just happens to be black so please stop judging me. Do not adopt my fellow black cat kitties around Halloween just to use us and then dump us on the side of the road. That is just cruel and not cool by any means. We do look fantastic during the Halloween season but please do not use us for that one reason alone.

We all want our forever homes just like our colored kitty friends. We seem to be the least adopted kitty based solely on our fur color and I just think thats wrong!

My mommy and daddy tell me everyday how beautiful I am. I have a wonderfully silky black coat from the tip of my nose to the end of my tale and I’m proud of it.

Here are some reasons why black cats are great to own:

1.  We are easy to locate during a snow storm.

2. Our fur won’t show up on your black clothes.

3.  We can make you look skinnier just my holding us because black is slimming.

4. Countries like Ireland consider us GOOD LUCK!!!!

5.  You can dress us up in any color outfit or harness because black goes with everything.

6. We are extremely sleek and silky.

I could go on and one, but you get the picture. We are awesome and you should adopt a fellow black kitty just like me.

My Ikea Pillow

Me on my pillow

Me on my pillow

So earlier this year my humans bought me my own personal kitty pillow to sleep on if I desire. They thought it would be funny to get me this particular one from Ikea. So yeah, it’s a black spherical pillow with two yellow eyes and a black tail. Does it look like me? Kinda. Whatever keeps my humans amused and happy I guess! It’s nice being a black cat, I go with everything!

The trip home…

Posted in Pets, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on October 13, 2009 by Salem Spookypants

The humans put me in my brand spanking new carrier and then we jumped into their car. My new human parent Joe needed to make a stop down the road so I sat in the car with my new human mommy and waited for him.  Ohh boy was I nervous. I gave her lots of hugs and kisses but I couldn’t stop meowing for some reason (I think my nerves got the best of me) My mommy thought my meows were adorable and continued to cuddle with me.

My new daddy finally jumped back in the car and off we went. We only traveled a few miles until we made another stop. This time they placed me back in my carrier and took me into the store. It was a pet food store. YUMM!!! They let me pick out some fancy kitten food, a scratching post, my own litter box and a bunch of new toys. BOY was I a lucky kitten!

I was anxious to see what kind of home I was going to have and to see if I would have any siblings. We pulled up to a condominium complex and parked in my mommy’s parking space. They carried me in along with all my new stuff and let me out pf my carrier.

WOW did I strike gold! My human parents set up my litter box, food and water while I started my inspection. They had a small  kitchen that opened up into the dinning room which then opened up into the living room. A nice open space for me to run around but still be able to see my humans. Then I noticed they had STAIRS!!!! I don’t think I had ever been up and down stairs before and let me tell you that they are so much fun!!!! Upstairs the humans had two bedrooms but one was being used as an office and a bathroom

Let me tell you this…..This is my FOREVER home and I KNOW it!!!!!!

I searched for possible siblings but it seemed that my humans were just starting out on their lives together and I was their first “child.” I was cool with that, and I knew I was up for being spoiled beyond belief.

Let me Introduce Myself…

Posted in Pets, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on October 13, 2009 by Salem Spookypants

My name is Salem Spookypants and I just happen to be a black cat.

I wanted to share with the world all of my experiences, likes, dislikes and adventures that  I have with my human parents Ashlee and Joe.

It all started when back in May, 2008 when my parents took a trip over to the Westfield Homeless Cat Project adoption center. They were searching for a kitten and had spent the last five months interviewing perspective kittens and cats but hadn’t come across the right cat until they finally met me.

My memory of what happened before I met my parents has faded away and I can’t even recall what exactly went on, but I was only 7 weeks old when I met them.

Anyways…. I was stuck in a small cage with another kitten about my own age. She was a very cute tiger kitten. There must have been about 15-20 other cages filled with at least 30-40 other adorable kittens. I was apprehensive about this whole adoption thing seeing as my chances were not so good…. But then it happened! A young couple walked into the small shed filled with all of us kitties. The male human (Joe) spotted me right away and asked to hold me. The adoption volunteers were eager to grab me out of my cage and hand me over to the human. I think it was love at first sight when he held me close to his burly face. I purred as loud as I could to show the human my love and I think he noticed.

He then handed me over to the female human (Ashlee). I instantly knew she was going to be my human mommy. I instantly grabbed her around her neck and rubbed my nose all over her trying to show her my affection and love.

After about 15 minutes of petting and getting to know each other they put me back in my cage. I was a little confused as to why they would do this to me but it seemed that they didn’t want to make any rash decisions on their future family member.

They picked up three other kittens and snuggled with them while I watched in horror before they came back to me.  I guess they just wanted to make sure that I was the “one.” They snuggled with me and told me that I was going home with them. I watched them scramble through their wallets and purse in search of the $70 adoption fee. My human mommy finally came up with the money and handed it over to the adoption volunteers and put a sign on my cage indicating I was taken.

Then the humans disappeared to the store next to my shed. I was scared at first that they weren’t coming back. Tsalem 7 weeksen minutes later they returned with my new traveling carrier.

Ohhh what a stressful first 30 minutes it was but it was one of the best days of my life!!
